  • What Are Weight Loss Medications And Injections?

Over the last few years, treatment options have developed greatly, with exciting research emerging constantly.

GLP-1 medications are the latest innovation - they are prescription therapies that mimic a natural gut hormone (GLP-1) in your body. These interact with appetite-regulating centres in the brain which can lead to reduced hunger, increased fullness and therefore lower calorie intake.

They help regulate blood sugar, reduce overeating, and help reduce fat storage, which can support weight loss. These class of medications have been around for many years, traditionally used for diabetes management. With increased research, these therapies have evolved to what we have today - including combination therapies such as Mounjaro.

  • How Do They Help With Weight Loss?

    How weight loss injections work

Weight loss injections work by mimicking hormones your body naturally produces after eating. These hormones signal to your brain that you are full, slow the rate at which your stomach empties, and help reduce appetite between meals. The result is that you eat less, feel satisfied sooner, and experience fewer food cravings throughout the day.
The therapies HEBA prescribes target one or two of these hormone pathways:

    • GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1): GLP-1 receptors specifically are found in the brain, pancreas and gut (as well as other tissues) and this allows broad metabolic benefits. By promoting the action of this natural hormone, we see reduced energy intake, enhanced metabolic hormone balance and ultimately controlling food intake/appetite. Wegovy (semaglutide) mimics GLP-1.
    • GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide): A second gut hormone that enhances the effects of GLP-1, improves how the body processes fat and sugar, and is thought to increase the overall weight loss effect. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) mimics both GLP-1 and GIP, making it a dual agonist.
    • Lipase inhibition: Orlistat works differently. Rather than affecting appetite hormones, it blocks the enzymes that break down dietary fat in the gut, meaning your body absorbs roughly a third less fat from each meal.

*All three mechanisms are supported by extensive clinical trial data and are approved for use in the UK by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

    What results can I expect?

Everybody's journey will be different and we will be here to support you all the way. Here are some average weight loss results from clinical trials:

I've lost 13kg, but honestly the bigger win is how I feel.

I started HEBA's weight loss program not really knowing what to expect. A year on, I'm 13kg lighter, I've cut out sugar, and I'm at the gym four times a week — something I never thought I'd say. The team checked in regularly and kept me on track, but the habits are mine now. I've got my energy back, and for the first time in years, it feels sustainable.

The Weight Loss Programme is designed to help people who are overweight or obese to achieve a healthier weight. Our clinicians will assess your suitability for the programme on an individual, case-by-case basis.

As a healthcare provider, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of quality and safety. All of our medications have been thoroughly researched and are evidence-based. Semaglutide has been approved for the long-term treatment of obesity. Our clinicians will work with you to define the optimum time for you to stay on the prescribed medication based on your individual circumstances.

  • What are the most common side effects with weight loss medications?

The most common side effects of GLP-1 medications are gastrointestinal including nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain, and constipation. These side effects usually subside as your body adjusts to the medication. For a full list of side effects, including the less common ones, always read the Patient Information Leaflet.
